January 2018: We say goodbye to our shepherd

After four and a half years, this month we said goodbye to our shepherd Phil who has decided to pursue his passion for sheep by going self employed and increasing his own sheep numbers including his own pedigree Texels.

We have enjoyed working with him and he became a real part of our business and family, always willing to help out and go above and beyond. He will be missed by everyone at Hope Farm, from us and our girls to all those down at the stables. We wish him the best of luck in his future projects.

December 2017- Hope Farm hosts a live Nativity

On the 23rd December we hosted the village church’s third live Nativity. More than 100 people came to watch the Nativity acted out by locals including our very own ‘farmer Ed’ who played the part of Joseph and the girls who where shepherds with their own sheep.

We had a visiting donkey and everyone enjoyed singing to carols and the ‘snow’ that fell especially for the event! The afternoon was completed with tea and cake and a chance to catch up and wish everyone a Merry Christmas!

November 2017 – Winter Shows

After a two year break from winter showing, we entered our two local Fatstock shows this month. The first was the Southeastern Primestock Show where Poppy and her lamb Fluffy did well in the wool on the hoof and young handlers classes, we also brought home a few rosettes for our lambs as well.

It was then onto Ashford where we won several prizes from 1st for our hay and a string of 2nds and 3rds for our live lambs and carcasses. Our Romneys did particularly well gaining 2nds in their classes; the first time we have entered them.

The highlight was Chloe who entered this young handlers class for the first time. She won her class which was the youngest section and then went on to win overall champion, well done Chloe!

September 2017- Edward judges at the Romney Society Show and Sale

Edward had the great honour of being asked to judge the rams at the Romney Sheep Society Show and Sale this month. He had a huge task with plenty of well bred rams put before him, but he managed to whittle  them down to his champion from the home of Barr Farms, Kent. This ram along with two others broke modern day records with all three making well over £2000 each.

August 2017- Summer draws to an end

As summer draws to an end and with the sheds full of hay and straw we attended our final summer show, the Edenbridge and Oxted, which is perhaps our favourite show of the year as we can relax and enjoy it knowing the weather dependant jobs are done for the summer.

We rounded up the show season with plenty of red rosettes and a reserve champion with one of the ewe tegs.  All three girls took part in the Young Handlers classes with Katie winning her class and Chloe coming second in hers. Poppy showed her lamb Fluffy with all the passion of a three-year old and was very happy to take home a pretty rosette! We look forward to attending the shows next summer.

June 2017: It’s Show Time!

So far this summer we have attended three local shows. We made a good start to the season at the Heathfield Show with two champions. The first went to one of our Poll Dorset tegs which won the British Shortwool section, while the second came in the commercial lines with our pair  of Beltex X Poll Dorset tegs winning overall commercial champion.

The same weekend we attended the Surrey Show. With a good turn out in the classes we where pleased to come home with several seconds.

This month we also went to the South of England Show where we had great success in the Poll Dorset classes taking both champion and reserve. The girls also had fun taking part in the Young handlers classes bringing home several rosettes.

July 2016: Hay making underway

Hay making finally got underway this month, with the weather giving us a chance to get stuck in to this year’s crop.

hay in shed

The hay barn quickly filled up, with nearly 8000 conventional bales stacked in it in just under two weeks. The years now smells of lovely green hay, while haylage making has also progressed well, with a large stack now at the side of the yard.

We now have small, round large square bales of hay for sale and large share bales of haylage available too. Next month will see us get the straw harvest underway.

June 2016: Success at South of England Show

Our show season continued this month with South of England where our ram lamb too the breed championship.

This was then topped off with our group of three taking the reserve championship in the interbreed group competition.

It is pleasing to see our sheep looking well and being rewarded with championship honours. This show also resulted in a number of ram sales, with the event proving to be a great shop window for the flock.

rosettes and girls

We had a great start to the season, taking reserve champion in the Any Other Shortwool at Heathfield with a shearling ewe, with this followed at Surrey County by our ewe lamb winning the championship in the Any Other Native classes.

Meanwhile, at home Molly pig has had a litter of 10 piglets to keep us entertained this month!
