February 2014: Cobtree YFC visits our indoor lambing unit
This month saw us welcome a local junior Young Farmers Club, Cobtree YFC, to our indoor lambing unit. This is a contract flock we run of just over 800 Suffolk x Mules put to Beltex rams, which are lambed indoors throughout February and are put out on to a mixture of new lays and a few permanent pastures at a few days old, providing the weather is kind to us!
The Young Farmers learned about the system, why the breed was chosen and what happens to the lambs from birth to sale. A lot of the members weren’t from farming backgrounds, so it’s nice to show them commercial systems and hopefully encourage one or two into a career in farming. As always any visitors are treated to typical Lovejoy hospitality, with plenty of homemade cakes which lasted all of five minutes. We welcome all visitors so if you or a group would like to come and see us please feel free to contact us.
